The Menendez brothers.

I don’t normally talk about true crime cases here often but I always watch criminal cases and documentaries especially the ones from the 80s. One of them stuck out to me and it is the case of the Menendez brothers. With the new documentary that came out on Netflix called “the monsters” which is supposed to be about them, but I can’t help but feel disgusted that someone created a storyline like that about something so tragic! 

They boys' names are Lyle and Erik, in 1989 they both killed their parents. Let me walk you through what conspired them to do such a thing. At the time of the murder, they must’ve been 18 and 21? I think but throughout their lives they were molested by their dad. All of this came out at the trial because no one really knew what was going on. Of course, family members and even teachers had suspicions that something sinister was happening, but no one said anything. When they had family members over Erik's dad would tell everyone not to go in Erik’s or Lyle’s room while he was in there with either one of them and no one was supposed to go down the hallway to hear what was going on! Excuse me? So, everyone just obeyed no one called the cops !? When Lyle was 9 years old, he asks her cousin if he could touch her down there because his father play like that with him! The cousin told his mother, and she did nothing! Both boys were sexually abused by their father for years until one day they had enough and shot both parents. You might be asking yourself well if the father was the one who abused them why did they kill their mother too? Good question they asked Lyle that at the trial he said it’s because one day “he came downstairs crying because of the abuse and his mother asked him what’s wrong and he wouldn’t say but his mother then reply “you think I don’t know what’s going on? I know everything “and in that moment he felt betrayed, angry and hurt that his mother didn’t protect him and his brother.  For a year no one suspected them of anything, they were paranoid but their parents left them a lot of money so they would live a lavish life and they spent over 2 millions dollars of the fortune I think buying expensive jewelry, clothes, fitness coaches, properties, boats… but Erik couldn’t take it anymore so he confessed his crime to a therapist who secretly recorded the conversation and then told his girlfriend about what the boys did, but when he broke up with the girlfriend the woman went to the police and told them everything. The therapist lost his license and both boys were arrested for their parents murder.

Now here’s where it gets tricky.

the prosecutors could very well argue they did it for money and they wanted to spend their inheritance that’s why they killed their parents because of all the money they’ve already spent but the brothers confessed that’s not what happened at all. They explained how they’ve been sexually abused their whole lives but by that point the public and the jury have already made up their minds they saw the boys as murderers. I’m not saying they’re not murderers, but I do have sympathy for them. My heart breaks for them, although they did an awful thing, but no one can fully understand what it’s like for a man to be abused by their father and not being able to do anything about it. What they did was wrong and I wish none of that happened. Watching their testimonies from the trial broke my heart, I cried so much watching Lyle explain how everything happened. Erik was also crying while his brother was on the stand and you can tell those boys are victims. I am not saying their parents deserved to die but what about them ? They were sentenced to life in prison. I can assure you if they were the Menendez sisters they would be free today but because they are men people cannot accept that men and boys can be abused sexually too by their fathers if they were girls that would make more sense.

Who are we judge? only God can sees our heart and our true intentions. When David killed his mistress husband God forgave him for that. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have went to jail yes they should have but life without parole is a bit much! when you have similar cases of people who did the same thing who were not given a life sentence but the only difference is that they were women.
