anti-depressant vs exercising

Publié par Gaelle.R

I am very transparent about my usage of anti depressant, I don't think it is shameful at all if anything I think it's brave of me to want to live and not off myself. I started taking meds for my mental health in 2021, at first I was scared and I expressed all of my concerns to my Doctor. He didn't want to prescribe anything at first because he knew I always said no in the past, so he wanted to know what changed? I explained to him what my situation was at the time and we both agreed I should give it a try. I also explained to him that I was trying to lose weight and I didn't want any meds with weight gain as a side effects... so we both agreed on one option and it worked. At first my sleep was non-existent and as my body took time to adjust I felt better and better...now I can no longer cry oh well.

To be honest with you I wish I tried exercising first before deciding to take anti depressant medication because exercising releases about the same hormones as an anti-depressant. They both release endorphins which are happy hormones back in your brain. In 2021 I was very anxious not just depressed but extremely pessimistic with recurring bad thoughts, I was miserable essentially. I thought about working out and I tried a few gyms but anxiety got the best of me. One time in 2021 I walked into a gym started walking on the treadmill for about 3 minutes and had a panic attack because I thought everyone was starting at me so I ran out of that gym (people were probably thinking what's wrong with her?!)

My advise to you is if you are depressed, before taking an anti depressant try exercising, try having a hobby I know it's hard considering you probably hate everything and you might not seem to find any pleasure in the things you used to love...look I have been there but:

  • try taking a walk outside especially in the summer because the sunlight will do you good. walk for 5 minutes and then increase it each time. Find a nice park or a cute neighborhood, park your car and start walking... breathe and just stop thinking about anything that makes you anxious or sad. Look around you, admire the flowers, smile at stranger (who cares if they don't smile back, smile anyway) smiling will trick your brain into thinking you're happy even if you're not.
  • try lifting weights at they gym, start slow you don't have to lift the heaviest weight. (try that for 10 minutes and then increase it each time)
  • run. if you don't enjoy running try walking, but running is amazing for people with depression. If you run for only 10 minutes you will see an improvement in your mental health and you will feel happier. You don't have to run for a long time, but if you feel like you can keep running longer then keep going.
  • try a new hobby. it doesn't even have to be a big thing, as long as it makes you feel good. It could be collecting rocks, vintage clothing or art, vinyl disk (that was a hobby I had in 2021 and it made me so happy collecting vinyl disk from my favorite artist and playing them on my record player like an old lady lol) don't let anyone makes you feel bad about your hobby if that's what you like then proudly do it.
  • socialize, it can be with 1 person or two but yes talk to a few people. You don't have to confide in them if you don't want to but go watch a movie with them, go out to eat with them and take walks with them eventually you will want to share your thoughts and that's good too.
  • change your diet: eat whole foods, cook and stay away from processed foods and fast foods. A bad diet makes you feel sluggish, less productive and you have less energy. When you eat healthy foods you will feel more energized and less tired, so now you'll have more energy to do productive activities.
  • limit screen time: avoid mindless scrolling, when you use social media less you will focus more on what's in front of you and on the people around you. Living in the moment will bring you more joy than scrolling on social media. social media releases quick and cheap dopamine in your brain just like fast food does, but that feeling doesn't last long so you will find yourself going back again for more pleasure

all of those thing are great but if you do all of these things and still feel depressed then maybe give anti depressant a try.

beware

Beware of any connection that happens quick because those connections tend to burn out fast and disappear. I am not someone who has a lot of good friends it's always one or two and those people are really close to me. I have my fair share of failed friendship past hurt from people I thought were going to always be there.

I don't like girl friendships, it always end bad. It always feels like a competition! like why? it's like who can get a boyfriend? who can dress better? who's prettier? who can dance better? who has a better body? I love having pretty friends. If I am friends with you it's because I think you're really pretty inside and out, I would never want you to change! I love you for you, but why are you competing with me?

The toughest workout of the week is probably Wednesday and yes it is leg day, by that point I’m starting to feel tired and so my lifting session is a bit rough!
Some Wednesdays are better than others but for the most part it’s always tough but I always push through it. I guess it makes sense that it would be Wednesday since it’s a day in the middle of the week known as hump day. But thankfully I’m done with work early on those days and I can take a fat nap before my meetings. That’s probably the best part about Wednesdays ! The naps!

some people tells me " wow you've changed, you don't talk to me anymore you're acting cold" Am I really? reasons why I take a step back :

  • when I text you, you take hours to reply best believe I will never text you again. It's like I am begging for an answer and honey I never beg. So that's why you don't see me texting anymore. I learned everyone is in a priority list; If I am not at the top or among the top 5 of your priorities,  then why bother?
  • I realize I go the extra mile while you wouldn't even go an inch for me. why am I bending myself over backwards for someone who doesn't care? you don't miss me, you miss the sacrifices I used to make for you.
  • you're in a relationship. If you're a man and I know you're dating someone I will never call, text or breathe near you. I will give you side hugs, I don't engage with men with girlfriends. If I already liked you I will never get in contact with you unless you come to me.. but aside from that I will avoid you like the plague. I hate cheating and I would hate for a girl to be on my man. I make mistakes and I am not perfect but I hate it when I or girls talk to men in relationships. I don't look at those men. I deserve my own boyfriend I am too beautiful and amazing to share a man. Eww. I am also jealous and possessive so no I can't do that.
  • You don't bring anything to my life, I am not talking about material things. Like you don't make me happy, you don't help me in any way, you don't listen, you don't do anything... so why would I stay in contact with you?

I am not a clingy girl, I dismissed and replace quickly. I am the type of person to confess my love today and block you tomorrow and I never go back on my decisions (if you really did hurt me, you're gone) I am a leaver. I don't stay where love is not.

My take on the ICE situation

You didn’t ask me but I’m going to tell you about what I think anyway. What I will

Say might shock you. I think it’s just awful! But the reality is they are actually doing their jobs! But the way they do it doesn’t seem right.  To go in a child’s school to take their parents and deport them is crazy!

Truth is it is unlawful to come to a country without proper documentation and I understand that a lot of people are running away from unsafe countries but is it worth it to go to a place where you can’t work or live without documentation? Well some people might say yes . I think everyone deserves to be safe and well but living in fear because you don’t have correct documentation is not a great life, sure one could argue it is much better than running away from death.

Take the temporary protected status situation that the president plan to end soon I believe the last day is on Tuesday ?! I do pray that doesn’t happen because I know those countries are not safe ! Especially Haiti! What do you mean it’s safe to return? Those immigrants with TPS came legally ! That I don’t agree with. That’s inhumane to deport all of these people to go live in a very unsafe environment! These people have jobs, businesses and they started a whole life here in the US so what they’re supposed to get up and leave it all behind?! I understand if an unlawful immigrant commit a crime and they get deported but those people who have jobs aren’t the problem! They are contributing to the economy ! America was built by immigrants. I am an immigrant and this is totally unfair. I pray that all my fellow Haitians get their tps renewed.

One thing that pisses me off is when people assume what kind of problems I could be having. Just because I’m not dating anyone doesn’t mean I don’t talk to men or that I’m lonely, I do go on dates I just haven’t found anyone that I’m compatible with yet. Just because I’m quiet or I look sad doesn’t mean I’m depressed or that I have  low self esteem issues. Quite the contrary I value myself and I hold myself at high standards and esteem. I love who I am, sure I can always improve but I’m not miserable because of who I am.  Just because I look serious doesn’t mean I don’t joke or can’t take a joke, that’s just my face I’m actually a goofball and a clown with my friends.

The moral of the story is if you think I have a problem talk to me or ask questions. Not only me but anyone else, instead of putting people in different boxes or judging them let’s talk to them first

At the end of last year I was thinking about getting braids with extensions...shocking I know. I was bored with my hair but honestly I hate using extensions because my scalp gets irritated and I just can't stand the weight of hair that's not mine. I love wearing my natural hair in whatever form that it comes in. I do believe no other hair will ever as beautiful as my own hair. If I have a daughter someday I will teach her to love her hair and I will never use extensions or use chemicals in her hair, she can do that when she's grown but as a child I am not doing any of that. I saw a 6 year old with a wig! and the baby didn't have alopecia or any scalp condition! why would the other do that? essentially that's teaching the kid that fake hair is better than her own hair. You have to start teaching your kid to love her hair at a young age, you can't start when when she's 18 and deep in fontal wigs and 30 inch buss down.

My mom did help me love my hair, she used to do cute hairstyle on my hair when I was a kid. She only put a perm in my hair when I begged her in 7th grade and even then I always wear my own hair. I started wearing hair extensions when I came to the US when I was 15 years old and I stopped when I was 26 years old so it's been 3 years since I made the decision to stopped wearing hair extensions/wigs but when I was 27 years old I wore braids for a week but I hated it and I immediately took it off after my dad passed away for his funeral because he used to always tell me how much he loved my hair, so I wore it to see him one last time.

1/30/26

Today mark 2 years since my father has passed away...I feel a little sad. Last year I did take the day off but not this year, I am working today. I can't help but remember that Tuesday morning when I got the call that my dad is gone, it felt like a dream  I could not wake up from. I felt like I was living someone else's life that day, I didn't cry until I cam home after the meeting because we had C.o Visit that week. I cried for hours, screamed and I was basically hysterical. After that I didn't cry for weeks, maybe months... I just couldn't cry and I felt guilty because why couldn't I cry? I felt like a monster, like the worse daughter in the world...I was numb.. I couldn't feel anything. I explored that with my therapist at the time, mostly he just let me talk but he didn't give me any feedback or anything that's why I did let him go because anyone can hear me talk...I needed a psychology perspective or evaluation and I didn't get that. I am skeptical now about therapy but once I find a good therapist like the one I had in 2019 after my cousin died I will stick with that therapist. I don't feel like I need one right now but at times when life gets hard, I spiral and I have really scary thoughts it would be good to be evaluated during those times. But I do have a support system, I have people I can call at 2am and I know they will pick up if they see my call. I have amazing people in my life they're not a lot but 2 is better than none. I don't call my mom when I am having a depressive episode because she panics and gets very concerned. I don't like making my mom sad, she the best human in the world I want her to stay happy forever...

I do miss my dad, I still replay the last voicemail he left for me. In it he said he loved me and he asked me to take him to get a haircut. He's so gentle and cute...when I see his favorite toothpaste, the bread that he likes, or green grapes I always think of him. When I drive to the places I used to take him I get sooo sad (I don't go to New York or Certain parts in my city because of him. I just can't do it yet. He used to live in new York) I only have one parent and she's not even with me. Oh Jehovah give me more time to spend with my mom I love her so much, if she ever leave me I will be suicidal.

for the mind

Publié par Gaelle.R

I am not afraid to admit some of my workout sessions are extreme! especially my leg days to the point that now they are no longer fun. My legs have developed a lot, I am seeing muscles in places where I didn't even know existed.  There's no need for me to train my legs for 2 hours but I do it, some movements are less challenging and others are very challenging let me explain...

in total you only need 45-60 minutes to train legs but because I am a psycho who loves to torture myself at times I do it for 2 hours! I normally train like that on Saturday mornings. It's brutal I lift heavy, I sweat a lot, I lose my breath, and I feel exhausted by the end of it. I don't workout like that more than once a week because it is not sustainable and I would suffer from muscle fatigue. Now that I started taking creatine I have even more stamina to keep going harder in the gym.  When I work out like a maniac I don't do it for muscle growth I do it for my mental health. I need a hard session at least twice a week... I also go hard on Thursday for my back days too. I need a great session to feel good and to want to keep on living a happy life. I am not even sure whether or not my anti depressant medication is working anymore but all I know is the gym is keeping me alive and I need it desperately. I could be crying in the gym parking lot and after a workout I am laughing like an idiot...I all I need is 2 hours in the gym, just give me that and I am the happiest girl in the world. Why Do you think I work out 6 days a week? I don't need to workout this much! I do it for my mental health as well as a nice body.

I am happy with my results and we're only getting better and better :)

If you want to increase deep sleep

Quick wins:

  • Keep a consistent bedtime

  • Avoid alcohol close to bed (huge deep-sleep killer)

  • Sleep in a cool, dark room

  • Get daytime exercise, but not intense workouts right before bed

  • Reduce late-night screens / stress spikes
